This DIY project was pretty easy to accomplish. I went to Goodwill one day, and I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for. I knew that I wanted to do a new DIY project that I could repurpose for someone as a Christmas gift. One of the reasons for doing this was to save some money in the bank. And also because I love to make things as Christmas presents.

I came across many items in the home decor section that I could repurpose and give as gifts. You could walk by these items inside Goodwill and not even think twice about how beautiful they would look in your home. Because, why would anyone want to buy them?

These thrift store pieces were ugly before. But I was able to turn them into something pretty. The DIY project that I created were two pieces turned into a farmhouse decor finish to hang on the wall.

I hope you enjoy this craft as much as I did. Please leave a comment below to let me know what you think of this project.

1. Take off the hardware first.

The mason jars and the wall sconces are what I bought from the thrift store. I took a flathead screwdriver to remove black candlestick pieces off the wood pieces so that I could apply the chalk paint. Be sure to clean off any dust and dirt first before you go ahead and paint.

2. Apply chalk paint.

Apply chalk paint to the wooden pieces with a foam paint brush. Make sure you apply brush strokes in the same direction and add at least two layers of paint to minimize brush strokes. Make sure you let them dry for an hour in between each layer of paint that is applied. I used chalk paint that I had bought from Walmart, called “Elephant Ear”.

3. Apply the wash paint to give it a rustic farmhouse look.

After the two wooden pieces were dried, I added the Vintage Effect Wash Paint over the wooden pieces to make it look rustic. I just dripped some of the paint onto a rag and I rubbed it on the wooden pieces. But I only needed to add one layer of paint. And use the same strokes when applying the paint.

4. Paint and sand mason jars.

Next, I cleaned off the mason jars with alcohol, as the directions say on the bottle of paint. Then, add the ivory chalk paint by Waverly from Walmart to the mason jars with foam paint brushes. I would add at least two to three layers of paint to the mason jars and give it about 30 minutes to an hour between the layers. Then you can also use a medium grit sandpaper to give it a “vintage farmhouse look”. Make sure you use the same up and down brush strokes with the foam paint brushes.

5. Dust off any dirty looking parts and give it a fresh coat of paint.

Although this was optional, the candlestick pieces needed a splash of paint to make them look shiny and new again. I had to clean them off because they were so dusty looking. And then I just applied black chalkboard paint. But you don’t necessarily need chalkboard paint. Any type of acrylic paint will do just fine.

After those dry off, place the mason jars upside down and grab a hot glue gun. Put a little glue on the candlestick pieces and place those on the mason jars. I let those sit for a few minutes to make sure they were dry and then you can attach the wood pieces back onto the candlestick holders.

Use some twine and flowers of your choice for decoration and hang them up on your wall. But I think they would look nice in an entryway, don’t you?

    • Hi Amy. I flipped the jars upside down and I just used a hot glue gun to glue on the attachments. Then I let it sit for a few hours to make sure they would hold. After that, I was able to screw the attachments back on with the jars still glued.
