I feel like we are finally moving up in the world! We are going from a rental house to a smaller apartment to a house that we can finally call home. My husband and I just recently put in an offer on our first home and it was accepted!
After looking for 6+ months, we finally found the home that fits our needs. It’s a 3 bedroom 1 3/4 bath house that has a bit of charm to it. The home has a nice backyard for my little girl to play in, a cozy fireplace in the living room with french doors, original hyde murphy woodwork trim, and a dining room with a large window seat.
We do not close on this house until the end of June so I can’t officially say that we are homeowners yet, but we are one step closer! There are just some ideas that I have that we have to do before we move into this house.
Interior ideas for our first home
There are so many projects that I already have in mind. But the absolute first thing that I would love to do is to paint the interior before we move in our furniture. It’s so exciting to think of all of the options there are with paint colors.
This is something that I have been waiting to do for so long because I have always wanted to pick and choose my own colors. And I have never had the opportunity to do that because we have always rented.
Now that I can do what I like to our first home, I really want to choose colors that make the home bright and airy. The house has wood trim that I am not going to paint because I think it will devalue the home since you can’t get hyde murphy anywhere.
Neutral vibes with pops of color
These are some ideas I am thinking of using throughout our first home. I’m in love with the white, brown, and grey tones. I love these colors because of how simple and clean they appear when you walk into a room. Plus, the neutral colors will go nicely with the dark wood trim.
The decor pieces that bring in pops of color are also lovely. I am normally the one person who has a hard time bringing in bright colors all together. But it is something different to experiment with.
The fireplace needs to be brightened up, so I am thinking of painting the brick white. As of now its just a natural dark brick color. But the fireplace looks dark and drabby. It also has some gold trim on the cabinet doors that cover the bookshelves beside it. I will have to paint those and probably stick with white altogether.
There are many more projects that I have in store for our first home. But one of the major projects that will happen in the future is a little kitchen renovation. The kitchen is very small and awkward. And we are thinking of knocking down the mudroom next to it. This is so we can have more counter space on top of making the kitchen roomier and open.
Putting up fences and gardening
After we move into our first home, we have plans to put a fence up in the backyard. A fence is necessary since there is a small drop off at the end of our yard. It’s about 4 or 5 feet in height which is not good for our toddler. So our goal is to get that done right after we’ve moved. But I might temporarily plant tall bushes in the back if putting a fence in needs to be delayed.
I am also getting excited about gardening. I’d love to fill our backyard with flowers and lots of it! I am a newbie at gardening so this will be an exciting new hobby to add.
We are so giddy about our first home and we cannot wait to get in and close on this house.
I will be documenting all of the projects that we complete in our home. As first-time homeowners, it is going to be a lot of work. Almost everything is new to us in the home improvement department. But we are looking forward to learning as we go.
