It’s that wonderful time of year again, and you are probably wondering what in the world should you get your little one for Christmas this year? It may be tough to even think about what you should buy them for Christmas this year because there are too many toys to count. Even the whole thought of it starts to become a little overwhelming. But, my stance on buying toys for Christmas is that it seems to be a waste of money.

I sort of learned that lesson back when my daughter turned 1 this year. She had received so many toys, and she rarely even plays with them. Really, the fact of it is that she doesn’t quite understand or appreciate them yet. Now that she’s getting closer to being 1.5, she has finally started to understand how to play with her kid toys. Next year, I am sure it will be quite different.

Even when your baby is 6 months old, it can be hard to figure out what to get for your little one. Last year, my baby was only 3 months old at Christmas and I had mainly asked for essentials that were needed, like clothes, diapers, shoes, etc. I felt that toys weren’t even an option to buy for her, but there were some things that really did come in handy.

For instance, she was given a night light up hippo that plays music and reads stories. And, it automatically started to play whenever she woke up crying, which was a huge lifesaver. Even when they are so young, sometimes you might feel that you still want to get your little one a toy or two, because who wants to buy their kids diapers for Christmas? That’s just no fun, right? So now, I have decided to put together some unique holiday gift ideas for babies and toddlers to help you mommies out with your shopping list this year.

A Holiday Gift that’s Perfect and Affordable

A holiday gift that's perfect and affordable. Are you clueless as to what kind of gifts to give this year? Click through to read more about an affordable holiday gift idea.Every holiday season, I always find myself spending tons of dollars on a holiday gift that is overly priced or unoriginal. But it’s probably because the gifts that I buy are last minute. Or I’ve run out of ideas on what to buy because I always feel like my family has everything they ever need. Do you run into this awkward problem yourself?

Each holiday season it seems that many products for gift giving are becoming more and more expensive. But this year, I decided to get creative and either make my own gifts or find unique products for sale that are affordable but still just as thoughtful.

What is the perfect affordable holiday gift that you can give this holiday season?

Art prints! The reason printables are the perfect gift for this season is because they are affordable and unique. You can shop for them right from the comfort of your own home. The best part about printables is that you receive them instantly and you can print them right at home! Or you can send them out to an online store and have them frame it up for you while they ship it to your house!

I think that these gifts are great because mostly everyone loves home decor. If you know someone who has the same tastes as you do, then this would considerably be the perfect gift for you to buy for someone.

Where to shop?

So if you’re looking for somewhere to start shopping for digital prints. Look no further than Etsy! There are a ton of creative people out there who are selling digital prints at a decent price! In fact, you can even check out my new shop here! I just opened up a new Etsy shop called Pretty Crafty by McKinsey, and I will be adding many more listings later on.

Have you heard of Small Business Saturday? It is a day that falls right after Black Friday. Small Biz Saturday was actually created for holiday shoppers to recognize and support their local businesses. Essentially, this special shopping day was started by American Express, during the recession of 2010. It was originally launched as an opportunity for holiday shoppers to step away from the large e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores to help small businesses, and support their local communities. In fact, you can click here to read and find out more about how this day got started.

So, why should you participate in Small Business Saturday?

Well, the answer is pretty simple. This is a great way for you and your friends to support small businesses and your local communities. You can support small businesses whether it is locally or online. For instance, many small businesses sell their products online through social media platforms. Instagram is a great way to shop through small businesses. Many businesses will be using the hashtags #SmallBusinessSaturday #SmallBizSaturday #ShopSmall to help promote their products. Don’t forget though, you can also support your local small businesses in store as well. You can see which neighborhoods and small communities will be participating in it this year by clicking on the Shop Small movement.

Birthday Theme Inspiration: Tropical Leaves, Flamingos, and Pineapples

Birthday Theme Inspiration: Tropical Leaves, Flamingos, and Pineapples! Click through to get a birthday theme inspiration perfect for your child's birthday party.

Just recently, I had celebrated my girl’s first birthday. I wanted the party to be special for her because, well, she is my first born and it was a big deal for me to celebrate her first birthday. After making it through the first year of her life, I wanted nothing more than to celebrate it big for that reason.

Birthday Theme Inspiration Search

My favorite part about planning this whole birthday party was picking out the decorations. But I somehow needed to find some birthday theme inspiration. I wanted to to do something kind of different yet, still appropriate for a toddler. But I wasn’t quite sure where to start looking for a birthday theme inspiration. My first instinct was to look on Pinterest. Pinterest has some pretty birthday pictures to look at, but I found myself to be disappointed at the limited search of ideas.

As I was searching through Pinterest, shopping online, and trying to come up with some theme ideas, I eventually came across a tropical end of summer theme. You know, the whole flamingos and pineapples theme? I was in love with the color scheme, but I made sure to shop around first to ensure that the decorations were easy to find. Come to think of it, the theme was a bit more popular than I thought. So, I had no trouble finding what I needed when it came to party supplies.

Best Places to Shop

The best places to shop for birthday decorations at a cost savings were Oriental Trading and Amazon. They had the best decorations by far because of the options available. I had searched for many stores in person, but most of them had only carried Disney character decor and that was just not the kind of theme that I was searching for. Plus, you can buy many things in bulk through Amazon. And the best part about the site is the free two day shipping if you have Prime.

For cake decorations, I had gone to my local grocery store for the smash cake. My cousin (talented at baking and only 16) decorated the most delicious cupcakes. I was so happy with the way they turned out. Honestly, if you know someone who bakes on the side, you should definitely look for someone who does that instead of someone who does it professionally. Unless you are looking to be perfect, then by all means, spend a little extra dollars! The idea I had in mind with this party was to keep it as simple as possible, but still kind of go out with a bang!

So take a look at the birthday decor below. I think that you will love them too! We ordered a ton of balloons and placed them all over the house. The greatest part was that they were so entertaining for the kids to play with. I think they turned out to be amazing. Let me know what you think about this birthday theme inspiration, and tell me what kind of theme you had for your little one’s last birthday party in the comments below!

A First Birthday and a Flamingle Event

A First Birthday and a Flamingle Event. This is for readers who can get insights about our firsthand experience of our child's first birthday and what we learned from the whole experience. Click through to check out this post.

When you are a first time mom, it seems like time goes by so quickly. All you want is for everything to slow down. My child finally turned a year old and we just recently celebrated her first birthday. I cannot believe how fast the first year went. I feel like I just had her yesterday and she was just a fragile little thing, lying there in my arms. With all of the chaos of planning and setting up the event, everything worked out pretty smoothly. However, it seems odd to me in a way because sometimes planning does not often work out in my favor. Can you relate? 🙂

First Birthday: Planning Messes

Both parties turned out to be a great time for everyone, even though our cake order from the hubby’s side was messed up. (Yes, we had two birthday parties!) I had put in an order for a few dozen cupcakes and a smash cake early in the week. When my mother-in-law went to pick up the order, there happened to be no order for the smash cake for some reason. Also, the cupcakes were all decorated with Fall colors which were not part of the theme.

Overall, the order was a mess, but they quickly came up with an order for a smash cake that day. It wasn’t my ideal smash cake, but there was nothing else that I could do about it.

The next couple of days go by and I get a call saying that my order is sitting at the bakery. How crazy is that? So, I figured I would take the smash cake and not the cupcakes since my cousin had made cupcakes for the party in Pittsburgh. Once I got to the store, I had told them everything that had happened and they ended up giving me the smash cake for free. I guess they felt terrible for what happened… But the cake turned out better than I had expected.

First Birthday: Activities

As I was rushing to get all of the decorations together, it almost seemed like I couldn’t enjoy myself. There was still so much to do and so little time. This was my first event planned by myself and I must say that it was a hell of a lot of hard work. But I wanted to keep it simple. The only thing that mattered to me was that my daughter and everyone else were having a good time.

As I had expected, my daughter grew tired throughout the day. Too many activities were happening at once and it overwhelmed her. Part of being a mom though is to automatically comfort your little one. But, my daughter is the type of child who is nosy and is a challenge to lay down for a nap sometimes. Even though she has a hard time napping at other places, I made sure I soothed her. From holding her in my carrier to riding her around in the stroller.

It was getting to the point where that was solely my activity for the rest of the evening. My only regret was not having our pack and play at my father’s house for her to nap or play in. But we all learn lessons as we go along with the journey of motherhood.

The Whole Experience

So, what did I get out of this whole experience? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that you take life as it is. Find the joyous moments that come with it. If you can’t do that, then you may find that you’ll never be happy.

And that sure does go a long way. When I found myself constantly worrying about the little things, it took the fun right out of the whole event. I just need realize that I should relax and have a fun time. And also, to stop trying to be so perfect. I think a lot of us, as first time moms, try and do this repeatedly.

Secondly, parents seem to be doing the whole “go big or go home” experience with their child’s first birthday. While there is nothing wrong with this at all, just remember that this is not all about you. Make it about your baby and your friends and family that took the time out of their own schedule to celebrate with you. This is a special moment that you could easily forget on how to enjoy this time with everyone, even out of all of the chaos.
