Just recently, I had celebrated my girl’s first birthday. I wanted the party to be special for her because, well, she is my first born and it was a big deal for me to celebrate her first birthday. After making it through the first year of her life, I wanted nothing more than to celebrate it big for that reason.

Birthday Theme Inspiration Search

My favorite part about planning this whole birthday party was picking out the decorations. But I somehow needed to find some birthday theme inspiration. I wanted to to do something kind of different yet, still appropriate for a toddler. But I wasn’t quite sure where to start looking for a birthday theme inspiration. My first instinct was to look on Pinterest. Pinterest has some pretty birthday pictures to look at, but I found myself to be disappointed at the limited search of ideas.

As I was searching through Pinterest, shopping online, and trying to come up with some theme ideas, I eventually came across a tropical end of summer theme. You know, the whole flamingos and pineapples theme? I was in love with the color scheme, but I made sure to shop around first to ensure that the decorations were easy to find. Come to think of it, the theme was a bit more popular than I thought. So, I had no trouble finding what I needed when it came to party supplies.

Best Places to Shop

The best places to shop for birthday decorations at a cost savings were Oriental Trading and Amazon. They had the best decorations by far because of the options available. I had searched for many stores in person, but most of them had only carried Disney character decor and that was just not the kind of theme that I was searching for. Plus, you can buy many things in bulk through Amazon. And the best part about the site is the free two day shipping if you have Prime.

For cake decorations, I had gone to my local grocery store for the smash cake. My cousin (talented at baking and only 16) decorated the most delicious cupcakes. I was so happy with the way they turned out. Honestly, if you know someone who bakes on the side, you should definitely look for someone who does that instead of someone who does it professionally. Unless you are looking to be perfect, then by all means, spend a little extra dollars! The idea I had in mind with this party was to keep it as simple as possible, but still kind of go out with a bang!

So take a look at the birthday decor below. I think that you will love them too! We ordered a ton of balloons and placed them all over the house. The greatest part was that they were so entertaining for the kids to play with. I think they turned out to be amazing. Let me know what you think about this birthday theme inspiration, and tell me what kind of theme you had for your little one’s last birthday party in the comments below!

A First Birthday and a Flamingle Event

When you are a first time mom, it seems like time goes by so quickly. All you want is for everything to slow down. My child finally turned a year old and we just recently celebrated her first birthday. I cannot believe how fast the first year went. I feel like I just had her yesterday and she was just a fragile little thing, lying there in my arms. With all of the chaos of planning and setting up the event, everything worked out pretty smoothly. However, it seems odd to me in a way because sometimes planning does not often work out in my favor. Can you relate? 🙂

First Birthday: Planning Messes

Both parties turned out to be a great time for everyone, even though our cake order from the hubby’s side was messed up. (Yes, we had two birthday parties!) I had put in an order for a few dozen cupcakes and a smash cake early in the week. When my mother-in-law went to pick up the order, there happened to be no order for the smash cake for some reason. Also, the cupcakes were all decorated with Fall colors which were not part of the theme.

Overall, the order was a mess, but they quickly came up with an order for a smash cake that day. It wasn’t my ideal smash cake, but there was nothing else that I could do about it.

The next couple of days go by and I get a call saying that my order is sitting at the bakery. How crazy is that? So, I figured I would take the smash cake and not the cupcakes since my cousin had made cupcakes for the party in Pittsburgh. Once I got to the store, I had told them everything that had happened and they ended up giving me the smash cake for free. I guess they felt terrible for what happened… But the cake turned out better than I had expected.

First Birthday: Activities

As I was rushing to get all of the decorations together, it almost seemed like I couldn’t enjoy myself. There was still so much to do and so little time. This was my first event planned by myself and I must say that it was a hell of a lot of hard work. But I wanted to keep it simple. The only thing that mattered to me was that my daughter and everyone else were having a good time.

As I had expected, my daughter grew tired throughout the day. Too many activities were happening at once and it overwhelmed her. Part of being a mom though is to automatically comfort your little one. But, my daughter is the type of child who is nosy and is a challenge to lay down for a nap sometimes. Even though she has a hard time napping at other places, I made sure I soothed her. From holding her in my carrier to riding her around in the stroller.

It was getting to the point where that was solely my activity for the rest of the evening. My only regret was not having our pack and play at my father’s house for her to nap or play in. But we all learn lessons as we go along with the journey of motherhood.

The Whole Experience

So, what did I get out of this whole experience? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that you take life as it is. Find the joyous moments that come with it. If you can’t do that, then you may find that you’ll never be happy.

And that sure does go a long way. When I found myself constantly worrying about the little things, it took the fun right out of the whole event. I just need realize that I should relax and have a fun time. And also, to stop trying to be so perfect. I think a lot of us, as first time moms, try and do this repeatedly.

Secondly, parents seem to be doing the whole “go big or go home” experience with their child’s first birthday. While there is nothing wrong with this at all, just remember that this is not all about you. Make it about your baby and your friends and family that took the time out of their own schedule to celebrate with you. This is a special moment that you could easily forget on how to enjoy this time with everyone, even out of all of the chaos.

5 Reasons You Could be a Stay at Home Mom

Are you trying to decide whether you should become a stay at home mom? It’s exciting, but can also be a little unsettling to think that you have a little one on the way. And now it’s up to you to decide whether it is the right choice to be a stay at home mom. The whole time that I was pregnant, I contemplated on whether I should stay home or go back to work.

In fact, up until about a month before I had to go back to work was when I decided to let my boss know that I would not be returning.

Here is the thing though. I loved working at the office. I had co-workers that were also my friends and my job was easy-going. But I felt that experiencing the first year of my first-born child was way more important. And let’s be honest here, there are plenty of beneficial reasons that you should be a stay at home mom.

Here are 5 Reasons you should be a stay at home mom

 1. Daycare and babysitters are too expensive.

While I was on maternity leave, I searched around for the most affordable daycare. I even looked around for babysitters to come to my home. Mind you, I only made 12 dollars an hour and the closest daycare to my work was charging 10 dollars an hour. I kept thinking, “How could I possibly afford daycare and go to work!?”

I knew that it was pointless for me to work and pay for daycare services. That’s when I realized that I would be working just to pay for someone to spend time with my own baby. It honestly didn’t make any sense. And that was my constant worry because I didn’t have any family available to babysit.

2. You’ll feel comfortable knowing that you are your baby’s main caregiver.

This was the other major reason I decided to become a stay at home mom. You may hear stories of abusive daycare or babysitters. And the thought of someone else caring for my child all day made me feel uneasy. I had major anxieties about whether they would be willing to pay constant attention to my 6 week-old baby or if they would just not pay any attention at all. The other factor about this is maternity leave does not last very long. Just as you are about to go back to work, you’ve established a routine for your newborn and now you have to adjust to a new one.

 3. You could potentially save money in the long run.

After my husband and I contemplated on whether I should be a stay at home mom, I realized that I was actually saving money by not working! It oddly makes sense after you factor in the gas mileage, spending money on lunches and snacks, and all of the other little things that add up.

After that came me, I actually felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. I was fortunate enough to have my husband take over some of my financial payments, for the most part. But I also saved up as much money as I could before I went on my leave and that lasted a good while until tax season. Mind you, I had my baby in September and I started saving as soon as I found out I was pregnant. It wasn’t a whole lot of savings but it sure did help.

4. You might be eligible for government assistance, such as WIC.

With both of my husband’s and my income together, we were not eligible for WIC. But, we were able to qualify after I had quit my job. The thing is that formula is very expensive. In Pennsylvania, it is about 15 dollars for a 12 oz. can of formula. I had never planned to feed my baby formula. I was able to breastfeed for the first 4 months, but things had changed. Breastfeeding became a challenge for me because I could never figure out how to latch her on without a nipple shield. And I was struggling to keep my supply up.

My Lactation Consultant was not very supportive and I also had a c-section. So, it made the learning process of breastfeeding much harder because I was in so much pain.

WIC is an amazing program for new mothers and babies. Even if you are breastfeeding, they still give you the essential nutrients that you need. It even helps you save money on your groceries, so don’t ever feel guilty for receiving money from a beneficial program.

5. You won’t have to miss any special moments when you are a stay-at-home mom.

I ultimately wanted to stay home with my girl whether I could afford it or not. This is my first child and I didn’t want to miss out on any special moments or bonding time with her. I wanted to get to know my child and be the one to soothe her when she cried. It’s a special thing to have carried a living being inside you for 9 months and suddenly getting to know their personality.

Finally, you can decide to become a stay-at-home mom.

Making the decision to be a stay at home mom can be risky financially. But consider the costs and the benefits that come from this major decision. I believe that certain things happen for a reason. Even though it may not happen exactly the way you would have wanted it to, it’s possible for all of it to work out in the end. It just depends on how you can make it work and whether you think it is right for you!
